City commissioners gave preliminary approval Wednesday night to a 28 percent increase in the city's tax rate and a $72.3 million budget for the coming fiscal year.

City property owners will pay $3.99 for every $1,000 in taxable property value, marking an increase from the current rate of $3.11. A portion of that tax hike will be wiped away by an increased statewide homestead exemption, which has been doubled to $50,000.

The proposed budget makes no allowance for employee pay raises and includes few capital improvements.

The commission will cast a final vote on the budget and tax rate on Sept. 15. If approved, the spending plan will take effect Oct. 1.

This should be interesting. Maybe they are going to use the "rob Peter to pay Paul" method of budgets.
