science and mathematics award nominees
Polk teachers were nominated for a teaching award in science or mathematics in a program of the Central Florida Public School Boards Coalition and the PRISM organization. PRISM is an acronym for Promoting Regional Improvement in Science and Math in the nine-county region that makes up the coalition.
The teachers have been nominated for an Exemplary Science or Mathematics Teacher Award. Each nominee will receive prizes during a September event at Lakeland's Southeastern University. The schools of each nominee will also receive funds earmarked for assisting science and mathematics instruction.

Webster University's School of Business and Technology received a specialized 10-year accreditation for its business and management programs from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.
POLK COMMUNITY COLLEGe
High school and college students are invited to the fall 2008 PCC Chess Club meeting from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at PCC LL on the Lakeland campus. The club provides opportunities for schools and individuals to play each other, computer based chess training and tournament preparation. Contact David A. Alexander, 297-1025 or DAlexander@polk.edu.
The Corporate College at Polk Community College will offer classes in Microsoft Excel 2003 at PCC Lakeland Airside Center. Classes are at 4:30 p.m. Level 1 will be taught on Saturday, Level 2 on Sept. 27 and Level 3 on Oct. 4. Each costs $159.
A Wednesday Office Workout class on how to create newsletters using Microsoft Publisher 2003 is scheduled for 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Fee is $30. Call 669-2941 or visit www.polk.edu/cc.
st. joseph's catholic school
St. Joseph's Catholic School in Lakeland will celebrate its 70th anniversary Oct. 30 at The Club at Eaglebrooke. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a private wine tasting reception. Dinner and auction are at 7 p.m. Bishop Thomas G. Wensky, Monsignor John P. Caulfield and Principal Lana Schartzwelder will be on hand along with other dignitaries from the Orlando Diocese.
