Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.
I will be kidless Monday (woo-hoo!!) and am planning on going to the range to take advantage of ladies day - no range fees - at Shoot Straight in Lakeland.
Anyone interested in joining me? :)
I am wide open on times since I don't have kids to plan around and I'd be happy to sit on the couch with someone's kids if you want to go but need to bring them with you. There's a couch under a big window where they can watch you or I can whip out the ipad with a Dora episode or Toy Story 3 to entertain them.
They do rent guns there if you don't have one or I will have my Ruger LC9 and Taurus PT .22 and I don't mind letting someone try either out.
I'm planning on going to the range Monday either way but would love some company :)

Permalink Reply by Shawn Spivey on June 15, 2012 at 11:09am I'm VERY tempted but I have my children with me. It would take cirque du soleil in the lobby to possibly entertain them. Besides I just read you don't have your kids. I would hate to rain on your parade and bring mine. :D.
Give me a time you'll be there if you can. I just may surprise you. Also, I'll check with a cousin to see if she's working or a friend as another option to leave them home.
The prospect has me excited. I haven't shot in a range since I lived in Europe eons ago. I'm glad Jennifer made mention of an ammo check. I need to do that too.
I think you have a concealed permit? I don't. Do you remember the transport guidelines of traveling in the car with a gun in Florida? Isn't it a 3 step, or something? I could look it up but thought you may know it off hand.
Permalink Reply by Jennifer Sabin on June 15, 2012 at 11:36am 3-steps is the general guideline, but it isn't the law.

Permalink Reply by Alicia (Alsan) on June 15, 2012 at 2:03pm The law in Fl if you do not have a permit is that the gun must be "securely encased" and cannot be on or ABOUT your person. It cannot be in your pocket, in a holster on you or laying out in the open in the vehicle. Securely encased is considered in a zippered case, the glovebox, etc. I have heard it is advisable NOT to have it in a center console of the vehicle because that could be considered "about" your person - what I was told by a police officer is that would be subject to each officer and it hasn't been tested in court to see how a judge would interpret it, you don't want to chance being the test case. The 3 step is often taught and is a good guideline, but like Jennifer said, it is not the law.
I really really don't mind occupying a couple of kids. I haven't gotten to see anyone in so long it really truly doesn't bother me.
I also am truly wide open on times - I just know I want to go on Monday to take advantage of no range fees. So if there's a time that works for anyone I can be there then, I almost always go alone and would like some company :)
Permalink Reply by Tabby on June 16, 2012 at 11:22am What time are you looking at going? I got to go to PTS down the road and I may be able to pop in and shoot a bit. Hubby said I can use his guns, just got to price the ammo. I do need to practice the 9mm for home defense more. Plus I can bring the shirts with me...Win-Win.

Permalink Reply by Tabby on June 17, 2012 at 12:09pm We were up there yesterday evening....LOL We stopped by there after we went to the movies. The range was packed. Hubby was asking me if I was going and I told him it depended on the time and how many are going. I just got to buy ammo in the morning before I go. Walmart is cheaper. I think he said I can get 100 rounds of 9mm for $20 or so. he just got a bunch of rounds for his AK-47 today. I know where he'll be Friday...LOL We usually go to Saddle Creek range on Friday mornings. It's only $5 per person where Tenoroc is $10 each.

Permalink Reply by Shawn Spivey on June 18, 2012 at 11:48am I was still scurrying around to find someone to sit for me and nothing has come up. Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment for myself that I'll need someone to watch them, too so I really don't want to double dip on someone (even if that option is open, which it doesn't look like either.) Even my older boys can't do it. Ethan went to the beach with his dad and Austin started a summer job.
I can't bring them, their father would be irate and that's some drama I don't need.
I'm still tossing around some options.
You are talking about the range between 98/Bartow Road and Memorial Blvd, right? I've never been but I passed by there once. Here's their website.
Permalink Reply by Alicia (Alsan) on June 18, 2012 at 12:17pm Yes that's the range I'm talking about. Hope it works out for you to come, but I understand if it doesn't
Permalink Reply by Shawn Spivey on June 18, 2012 at 7:45pm okay, boo for me, but I hope who ever went had a great time. Alicia, don't give up on me. I'm determined to make it eventually. :)
