Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

Hey, gals!  I'm not really sure this is the best place for this, but here it is going!  My ice maker has stopped making ice, so I need to find someone to look at it.  I also need my dryer vent cleaned.  I'd like to find someone to take care of both these things at once so I'm not paying 2 service fees, etc.  Sears was my first choice, but it takes 2 depts (thus 2 fees) AND their first appointment for my icemaker was nearly a week out, which I find ridiculous.  So...let me know what you think, who you know, etc.  Thanks!

To Angela Marks,
My name is Brian and I am part of the Sears Cares Escalations team and I’m sorry to read that your ice maker is having issues. I know you have talked with our customer service folks and the information given is correct but we have some options that may help you decide on having Sears effect the repair on the ice maker and dryer vent cleaning. At your convenience, please contact my office via email at searscares@searshc.com so you don’t have to continue to be frustrated by this situation. In the email, please provide a contact phone number and the phone number the refrigerator/dryer were purchased under (if different than the contact phone number) and we will call you directly. Also, in your email, please provide the screen name (Angela Marks) you used to post on this site, for reference to your issue, and we do look forward to talking to you soon.

Thank you,
Brian J.

I love love love the site www.repairclinic.com you can troubleshoot and get step by step instructions for problems and order parts. When I get tired of waiting for my hubby to get to my honey do's (he fixes all our stuff) I'll hop on that site to see if its something I can handle or better to wait for him. You'd be surprised how much isn't that bad to get into. Even if you still decide to hire a contractor, you can possibly get an idea what is wrong to be sure you're not taken advantage of. Troubleshooting ice makers is here: http://www.repairclinic.com/Ice-Maker-Troubleshooting

Courtney, my husband Bret (apartment maintenance) was just saying that many ice makers now have modular parts - can't replace individual gears, motor, etc but you could replace the whole modular piece or circuit board. In the old days you could replace parts separately that you can't anymore. He said that it's often simply not worth repairing them when the cost of a whole new ice maker runs approx $60-80.

Angela and Courtney, Bret said he could help troubleshoot the ice makers if you state the brand and about how old it is. He can help at least say if its worth hiring to repair or better to just get a new one and save the money.
We have used that repair clinic website a few times - mostly just on the washing machine though bc we THANKFULLY bought the extended warranty on our fridge (good thing b/c we have had 7-10 service calls in 7 years).
Brian J...thanks for your input. I'll get an email out to you. Still haven't dealt with either issue.

Alicia, I have a whirlpool side by side with an in-the-door ice bucket. It is 5 or 6 years old, I guess. I could figure it out if I tried hard enough. The infrared sensor is on, but there is no ice being made. If Bret can take a guess, that'd be great. I will check out the website you mentioned, and I'll be sure to bookmark if for the future!

Sarah, oh, my! Good that you got the warranty. If it were a car, it would be a lemon!
