Unfortunately I don't have a straight answer for you but this is what my experience has been. Family Fundamentals offered a class but after showing up 3 times with my mom friends and the teacher being a no show, we gave up. Kindermusik for a short while was offering them so you may want to email the teacher and ask. In Plant City, Peace Love Play offers sign classes and it's really cute from what I saw. They incorporate songs and activities vs just showing you a bunch of signs like my experience has been. This past winter, I did it at the Bartow Library but it was just a presentation of signs and not really a mommy-baby interactive thing. Plus, I don't think they plan on doing it again anytime soon, but you could call and just let them know you are interested.
Gymboree had a signing class too.
I heard Gymboree closed last week.:(
I don't know of any sign language classes, but we have DVD's called Baby Signing Time. My boys LOVE them! They incorporate music, cartoons, and singing. It's pretty catchy and very entertaining.

You may have asked awhile ago, but I have good news for you now.  Kindermusik Sign and Sing is starting at InTune Studios this June.  The Sign and Sing class uses strictly American Sign Language, and provides training in the 5 keys to success in using sign language with hearing children from 6 to 36 months. There are TWO FREE Preview classes on Monday, June 13, 12:00 pm. and 5:30 pm.  Then the 5 week semester starts on June 20th - same times.  On the Music Connections website, you can see a more full description, and a schedule where you can register online.  Email musiconnx@att.net to put your name down for the FREE PREVIEW.  Please include the time that works best for you.

We did the family fundamentals one. There are some good videos out there too. The library had one that my daughter responded to (signing time, maybe?).

Both my kids were speech delayed. My son was quite delayed, so when my daughter was born preemie, and didn't have any words by a year old, I started taking her to family fundamentals. It seemed like all the other kids were catching on except for her. She eventually did sign "more" but I don't know if that was due to the class, or just the combo of the class, the videos and me working with her. She may have learned one or two more signs after that, but I encouraged speaking over signing.

We eventually got therapy through early steps and that helped a little. She was good at communicating her needs without words, where as my son would get more frustrated and act out. He would have benefitted more from signing, but I didn't try it with him.

I had a mom recently ask me.  "My child is so active, will he really get much out of a sign language class?"  That is a very valid question !  I'm sure every class, and every child is different, but I know parents want to know what to expect from the actual experience.  In Kindermusik, we have a very safe environment so the children can feel free to move about and explore.  If we tried to make them sit in your lap and make them sign, there would not be much learning going on - they would be so focused on getting about and moving.

The focus is on teaching parents the methods to use that is most likely to result in a benefit to communication, and when to use them.  We don’t typically see very much of the children signing during class, esp. at the younger ages.  But we do hear from parents over the next few months as they start to see their child signing more often.  Children over 16 months are often likely to start using the signs right away, and love to sign along as we sing the songs.

We really focus on functional signing, as part of a conversation, whereas some other programs and DVDs encourage the child to make the sign when the word is spoken, even to the extent of using flash cards.  We do have flash cards, BUT, they are for the parent’s reference.

In class, we use a LOT of props and encourage parents to use signs while their child is fully engaged in a fun activity.  For example, we use stuffed teddy bears with a fun song, and make the sign BEAR on the bear, near the bear, on the baby, and on ourselves when they finally look at us.  The class is not just about how to sign different words, but about choosing the best set of words for YOUR family, and determining how, when, why and where to use signs for those words.

Come see for yourself at the FREE preview class this coming Monday!  Just email me at musiconnx@att.net to save a space for you and your child.  You can gain a lot just from the free class !

We took the Kindermusik sing and sign class with Debbie when my son just turned 1 and we loved it! All the Kindermusik programs are great!

My son was very verbal and we still loved the signing because it was another way to stimulate his brain.

Go to a free preview class and you can see the value of Kindermusik in general. It is a great program, we began when my son was 9 months old and took our last class at around 3. I wish we could still fit it in and I had learned about it with my older daughters.

Debbie is so enthusiastic and has such passion for children and music, it is so rare today to find someone like her.

We miss you miss Debbie!

Carla and Ashton

Awww !  Carla, I miss you and Ashton too.  Such fond sweet memories come rushing back.  You and Ashton were in my very first Sign and Sing class.  Ashton is such a unique character.  I think his favorite was the Fiddle Dee Dee class with the puppy puppets.  I would so LOVE to see that little boy again.  You'll have to come to one of my Sat. Kindermusik Playdates so I can see you both.

Be well !
