ive been going through alot with bullying ,my son has been coming home depressed for 2 1/2 months ,because being picked on hes 10 years old he actually said I should just kill myself.he wears a big winter coat everyday "he says he does this so it wont hurt as bad when students hit him"I started going to his school to sit in on class after he came home with scratch directly beneath his eye where a student attacked him with a pencil,he wore a bruise on the back of his leg for 2 weeks from a boot when a student kicked him,I was at his school at lunch 2 students approached me and state I feel real bad for your son kids always pick on him but they were scared to say anyting for fear it would start being them picked on, on the way from lunch 2 classroom a student was jumping on beams I told teacher and student said "I hate snitching B*****"s And kids said who he said "***" mom meaning me I go to office to report this and principal gets on intercom to  tell teacher to send the student to office while on intercom you hear teacher scream "put that down now "I hear a loud crash this student picked up a chair went to where my son was and hit him with it"student was suspended for 3 day this student is already on probation and in 4th grade ,My son comes home monday said"*****he threatened my life today i said what do you mean he said this student said he was going to kill me dead he  is going to stab me with a knife . I call school they say without witnesses there is nothing we can do I said im not comfortable with my son going to school they say all we can do is a bully report i said please im scared for my son so they reluctantly did so ,I go to pick up my son  and go in office to be told that if the resource officer could not find coaberating evidence that my son could actually be in trouble for falsifying a report <"OH my god" i just couldnt believe I was just told this after everything thats been done to my son ,"talk about trying to intimidate me to back off"any ways resource deputy comes to investigate and had already had run ins with this child still nothing has been done and I had to send my child to school im so scared what can I do

I wouldn't let my son go to that school again! Keep him home an home school him or see if there is another school he can go too. If you can't do any of the above call Tallahassee, Fl Dept. Of Education Office an make a complain about this an ask for help. Hope your son stays safe! God Bless!

Shannon, this breaks my heart to hear your, and your son's story!   You don't have to tell us what school this is but can you tell us if this is in the Polk County School district?   If you feel you're not being listened to within the school, you may need to consider seeking help beyond the school.

Have you considered contacting someone at the county level to request an investigation or school transfer for your son?   Do you think a fresh start in a new environment would benefit him?

Also, have you considered contacting local law enforcement?

You certainly need to document as much as possible.  Take pictures of the injuries you describe. Write down what your son is telling you with the date and as many details as possible, like, during Science......  Also document who you talk to and what was said so you may be able to accurately reference back to it.

Also, consider finding some counseling resources for your son.  I'm not saying talking with you isn't helpful to him but sometimes a child can open up more to someone outside of the situation.

Please know I hope this gets better for your family and I'm so sorry this is happening to you.  I want you both to know not to give up and there has to be brighter days ahead.  Keep us updated if you can.   Good luck and know you are welcome to vent here anytime.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. If I were in your shoes- I would keep my child out of school and contact law enforcement. Praying for a positive outcome!

i have contacted the authorities the school resource officer is a active deputy with polk county sheriffs office ,keeping him home is not allowed its illegal  tried that not able to homeschool and school wont give permission for transfer waiting on response from scgool board this is in polk county lakeland florida to be exact im not the shannon sanders they show in todays news my middle name is not nicole just in case anyone  wonders

Not saying keep him out for the entire time- just until a solution is made. Another idea would be to invest in some kind of recording device where you can put it somewhere on your child so that you can obtain proof of the threats. Have you tried to get him switched to another class? It wouldn't get him totally away from the bully but it would help during class times. Good luck :)

its illegal to keep him out of school during bully investigation but i cant sit and worry all day and i cant stay at school everyday i may have to keep him home and accept the legal ramifications

they wont transfer out of class because teacher student ratio

i allowed him in school because the fcat  he sat in media center while class took theirs because he is a 504 plan accomadated student they  do his fcat verbally so i knew he wouldnt be with student but i dont have that security now the test is over

I understand :( I don't have a child in school yet so I was just thinking of what I would do ... but it sounds like its a no win situation right now. :( I am sorry your son is having to go through this.

Since your son in on a 504 plan can you get the ADA and their legal resources on your side? Try calling them to see if they can help. If you feel his 504 plan was not adhered to, maybe remind the admin that if they violate his 504, they are PERSONALLY liable and can be charged both in civil court for damages and criminally, they cannot hide behind the school district. Maybe when you are constructing his 504 plan for next year write some things into to cover this kind of situation.

if you can get his doctor to write a note you can keep him home legally.

Also, they can switch him to another class if they have another student switch too so the ratio stays the same. It sounds like the school admin is really trying to stonewall you - was the district office any help?

It is crazy that a kid cannot feel safe in school and has to wear a coat like armour....................

its crazy but hurtful as a parent to watch your child be so distracted its like everyday i have to work at cheering him up it seems as though all the ideas ive had and tried are wht others would do but you did have a new one for me on the legal resources ill check on because ive tried the threat and i did have his 504 plan changed but that hasent helped

the only other thing I can think of is extreme, but it would work - move to another home.  If you live in a different school's zone you can transfer him the day you move.  Maybe you know someone you could stay with for a short time to change his school and then drop him off every day..........

Since not complying with a 504 is a violation under the American's with Disabilities Act it's a federal crime, not state - IF you can bring charges the consequences are pretty big.  There are lots of precedents so hopefully the ADA can help you.

My daughter is in 5th grade and next year I am going to have her attend Florida Virtual School at home - it has 2 tracks, one homeschool and one is not, so maybe next year it could be an option for you.

I had a friend in highschool who got a transfer to another school because she had issues with an abusive boyfriend. The psychiatrist wrote a letter and she was given a transfer. This was like 15 years ago though...

This happened to my daughter at elementary and the words out of the the authorities are exactly what was said to me. That makes me so angry.
