Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.
I have a 5 year old son that I would like to keep busy this summer.
Does anyone know if there are any inexpensive martial arts schools close to Lake Alfred? Auburndale or Winter Haven perhaps?
If not, maybe tumbling or dance? Camp?
Everything I've found so far is like $50+ a month and I simply cannot afford that. I would like to find something fun and interesting for him to do, yet preferably not go bankrupt in the process.
Good luck with that. I don't think you are going to find anything out there that cheap.
That's unfortunate. I love living in Florida, but there are really some things I miss about Missouri and cheaper kids activities is certainly one of them. Programs at the YMCA were so cheap there. I never paid more than $15 for ANY sports related activity through the Y and luckily they provided most of the activities we were interested in. I just paid $65 for T-Ball here and it was SHOCKING. In Missouri wrestling and football was about that much for the season, but it was because everyone had to be insured so well. Flag football was offered through the Y, so it was cheap, but tackle football and wrestling weren't, so had to pay more for them.
Good Luck w/ finding anything cheaper then $50 a month. That is SUPER cheap!! Most places want anywhere from $65-$120 a month. That is just the way it is. Even the Rec Center costs about the same as the other places. Now, if you check out the library during the summer they have different activities. Usually they revolve around a summer reading program. Some of the movie theatres have free movies. If you look around there are all kinds of things to do. Or you can find things to do at home to keep your kid active. There is the park too. I hope this helps.
Oooh I didn't think about the library...and FREE movies, oh yeah!! We have an inground pool, so that will keep him really busy most of the time. Lake Alfred has a couple of great parks which is nice. Mainly looking to find ways to get him socializing with other kids. Thanks for the ideas Heather!
I just thought of something...Home Depot does those crafty events for kids. I think they are free. You may just have to pay a few dollars for the materials. I checked the bulletin board when I was there today but didn't see anything listed, so you will just need to call and find out when the next one is. I think they do them every other Saturday.
Oh my goodness Just Jen, I absolutely love the gymnastics idea!! He has coordination issues and tumbling is a great way to work on that.
Jmarr, I forgot all about Home Depot doing those events. We used to do the one at Lowe's and it was free. Had forgot all about those. Maybe we could hit up Home Depot AND Lowes, LOL!!
Thanks for the great ideas! I knew I loved this site for a reason ;-)
I just found a place called 'Old School Martial Arts' at 1815 Thornhill Rd in Auburndale that only charges $40 a month and that's for TWO classes a week (Mon & Wed from 6-7). They also have family rates. For kids they teach Judo and for adults they teach Judo and Jiu-Jitsu.
They offer one free practice and then if you sign up you get 1/2 off the first month. Also if you pay 3 months in advance you get a free Judo Gi (uniform). I'm excited to go talk to them.
