My grandfather would be in the kitchen making Dutch Leaves (fried bread dough). After he passed and everyone started moving away and on with their life, I started to miss them. After moving here I would make them every Christmas and now I get to enjoy them with my husband, our son and my mom. You leave the covered dough out to rise over night. In the morning, I heat up oil in the cast iron skillet, cut strips of dough off, fry till golden brown, drain on paper towels, smother in real butter and generously dredge through powdered sugar. Not the healthiest, but they are so good. Looking forward to them again this year.
On Christmas Eve my parents come over and we eat Cuban Sandwiches from Silver Ring and Yellow rice,, (Not sure where this tradition came from but, we've been doing it for several years now!) The kids get to open one present on Christmas Eve and then we read the traditional Christmas story (the story of Jesus) and then we read the regular Christmas story about Santa. Every Christmas we get up with the kids and open presents.... Then my parents come over and the kids open more presents and then my mom and I cook Christmas breakfast... In the afternoon we go to my husband's mom's house and his grandmas house where the kids open more presents (can you say spoiled lol) On the way home we stop by my Aunt's house and eat Christmas dinner.. It's a very busy but yet a very enjoyed day! =-)
