Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

I'm wondering if any of you have used cloth diapers and would care to share your experience.  I'm looking for ways to cut down expenses with a new baby on the way and with the changes to the Amazon Mom program have been considering switching to cloth diapers.  Any input would be much appreciated.  From what I've been reading online it sounds like many people have used them and have had a positive experience.  I would also be interested to know if you have used them what system you used.

Thanks

I used them for a year or so with my daughter. I tried lots of brands, lots of styles. I really liked the Thirsties covers. Pre-fold diapers were great at first, but I liked "all in twos" a lot as time went on. I also used woolies a lot as covers at night. The diaper liners are great for cleaning BMs, but I was too lazy for the extra step at home, and only used them in public. I went to a diaper store for my first set of diapers and supplies, and once I got the hang of it, I bought lots of stuff on line. There were a bunch of great websites....RDA (the Real Diaper Association?) has a good one. I even got some diapers through Craigslist and Etsy (there is a woman locally who makes cute diapers on Etsy). I even constructed a diaper with elastic, velcro and insert flap after studying a youtube video! I got so hooked! I can't tell you how much time I spent on line looking at diapers, etc! I sold most of mine and kept a few as "memoirs". I know it is expensive to get started, but if you take good care of them, you can resell them, or use them for the next baby! I love to talk diapers, so if you want to friend me, I'll give you my number incase you have any questions.

I cloth diapered both of my sons for a total of about 4 years and loved it :)  It truly saved money and of course was so good for the environment.

You *can* spend a lot of money on cloth diapers as well because there are some really cute ones and all kinds!  Gone are the days of your grandmother's cloth diapers! :)

But because at the time I was a stay at home mom and we lived on about $15K a year it had to be inexpensive to start and maintain.

So I just used simple Chinese and Indian prefolds with the gerber vinyl covers from Walmart mainly.  I did have a friend from my local LLL give me a bunch of Motherease terry cloth ones as well and used the gerber covers with those.  I also had a few bummis covers I loved.

Also I invested in a few G-diaper sets and then used the covers with a prefold folded in!

I got my prefolds from Ebay of all places.

They have many moms who sell new and used diapers there!

I spent about $100 total to get started and maybe invested about $30 after that total.   So for nearly 4 years of diapering costing $130ish bucks....not bad :)

Here are the gerber covers I used:

Hi, Jenny!  : )  I wanted to add some other PolkMoms links that has valuable information within them on the topic you are seeking.   I'm glad to see you've gotten some great feedback in your own discussion too.

Check these out:

Could Cloth Diapering be the Right Choice for You?  has some fantastic mommy suggestions and feedback.

In our, Your Favorite Diapers discussion, cloth diapers actually received several thumbs up.

Cloth Diapers and Supplies is Jmarr listing her supplies but a suggestion on buying and selling was added there.  Maybe they can update that so we know how it turned out?

We used cloth and it really was much easier than I thought it would be. We tried a variety of styles at first -- just bought one of each to see what was going to work. Eventually we ended up getting a small supply of Happy Heinys to send to day care because they were the same to put on as a disposable -- pre-fitted, velcro closure, and you can stuff it with as much or as little as your little one needs. For home though, once we got over the intimidation factor, Chinese prefolds were the go-to diaper. Cheap, absorbent, and not hard to put on once you get the hang of it. Using a fastener like Snapeez makes it very easy -- no diaper pins necessary. We also used a fleece liner with our prefolds. Using cloth will keep 2 tons of waste out of the landfill per kid and will save you tons of money!

I used cloth diapers with my daughter (who is now 25 lol).   I cannot tell you how much money I saved by doing this!  It was absolutely the best choice I made because she actually potty trained early, which I attribute to the cloth diapers.  I think because they can actually feel the wetness next to their bodies rather than not being able to with disposable, they learn to use the potty earlier.  I cannot swear to this as fact, but I do know that it worked with my daughter.

I actually used the old flat kind that you have to fold with the pins.  My mother used these on us girls and she just passed on her knowledge to me.  I used rubber pants to cover the cloth diapers also.  It honestly really wasn't the hassle that everyone thinks it might be.  I always carried extra diapers, rubber pants and an extra pair of clothes if we went any place just in case.

Wishing you well in your decision.  Congrats on the new baby.

Thank you so much for the input from everyone.  I'm going to take the plunge with cloth.  I believe that we will start with either the flats or prefolds with covers since I'm a SAHM now.  I will eventually probably add some pocket or AIO for church and outings.  I wish I had thought about this with my others.  I can't believe the money that I could have saved although I was working at the time and I'm not sure I would have been as open to the idea.  I never knew that there were so many options in cloth.

We use cloth diapers and we love them!!!  It's so nice to not have to spend all that money on disposables!  I've bought several diapers from Craigslist, but most of ours are Cotton Babies products.  Our favorites are BumGenius pockets and Flips.  I actually prefer to use prefolds in my Flip covers as opposed to the microfiber inserts they came with.  A great way to purchase Cotton Babies products cheaply is to watch their Clearance section of their website.  They will have "seconds" sales which are new diapers with a minor defect that won't affect performance. I've ordered several seconds and haven't been able to find the defect.  If you have any questions or want to see some of the diapers I have in person before you buy, just let me know!  :-)

I'm planning on CD'ing our little one when he arrives and was wondering where the best places are to buy the Chinese and Indian prefolds that everyone seems to love.  It seems the store brand prefolds don't get good reviews and I'd rather get the good ones right away.  Also, does anyone know of any local daycares that accept CD'ed children? Thanks and it is so great to know there are more local moms going the cloth diaper route!

Hi Brenda:

So far with the research I've done, it seems that the Green Mountain Prefolds have some of the highest ratings and really seem to hold their value if you choose to resell them later.  It also looks like alot of people have used OsoCozy which is sold at ClothDiaper.com and Amazon.com.  Another good website that alot of people online seemed to like was Niki's Diapers and I am probably going to be ordering their Economy package for a little over $200.00 that has all the prefolds and covers to use through potty training or I will go with the Green Mountain prefolds.  Some other systems I've been looking at is the Flip and Bum Genius 4.0.  Someone already mentioned the CottonBabies.com website that currently has the Bum Genius 4.0 on Clearance which make them about $12.00 per diaper.  I also noticed that the Thirsties Outlet website has some of their seconds on sale in both their covers and Duo brand diapers and covers.  A really good website that I found in addition to the ones mentioned above is Diaperpin.com.  They have a lot of diaper reviews.  I also found a great deal of info on You Tube to include instructional videos and reviews.  Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

You can also order Chinese or Indian prefolds from Amazon for about $17-$22 for a doz.
Some are eligible for super saver shipping [order over $25].  When I first started I got 4 doz and that lasted me through two boys :)

So about $80 for the prefolds and depending on covers, you could easily spend less than another $100.  Again, I loved the simple gerber vinyl ones.
