Dance Moms: I Need Paint Tips and Where Do I Buy Shoe Paint?

If you have a child in dance you just might understand my story.

I have a pair of black tap shoes that need to be tan by recital.  I hear moms talk of getting a special shoe paint to change the color of the shoes instead of buying an additional pair.  I guess I could buy a new pair of shoes but it seems a waste and plus I would worry about new shoes making blisters, you know?   The shoes my daughter has danced in all season are "seasoned" in and fit great.

I did have a veteran dance mom tell me she's found the shoe paint at certain Wal-Marts a time or two.  I called Bartow and Mulberry.  Both locations said they do not have it.  I'm on hold now with Wal-Mart in Winter Haven (the one closest to hwy 27).

If you've painted shoes before, first where did you find the shoe paint?  Is there a brand or type that works better than another?   Any tried and true tips to share for painting the shoes?   Help please. :)

I know you don't want to get her a new pair, but I have a pair of tan tap shoes, size 10 I think. If that would work for you I'd be happy to pass them along. I bought them gently used and then we never took tap lessons.

I feel for you!  I went through this last year...our fifth year of dance...was the first time I had to paint shoes...and 3 pairs at that!  See below for a couple places in Lakeland.  Our dance teacher recommends Edgewood Drive, but I didn't realize at first and bought some at McFarlands, he was nice.  Our dance teacher, as recital gets closer, tells you the # code (think it was a 3 digit #) of the paint, so I would probably wait to get that before you buy...different shades.  If you mention where you dance, they may discount...did for me last year at McFarlands.  Each can was about $8.

I taped up the areas I didn't want painted with paint trim tape and then just sprayed in short bursts.  I knew I would also be spraying a second coat once the first dried, so if I didn't cover a spot real well the first time, no big deal...second time did the job.   Might need new shoe laces to match.  I also bought some ribbon at Hancock's on S Fl Avenue in Lakeland to match shoes as well.

I was told some people share paint and split the cost, but I just kept the cans for back up to touch up the shoes when I needed to (which has come in handy).  I also wouldn't paint until close to recital, they can get messed up if you wear them to class after you have painted them.  I just waited until about a week before recital and then painted them.  Once I painted them, just had her go to class in her socks.

When mine was smaller, I just bought new shoes, but she was just in one or two classes and wasn't growing much.  As she has gotten older, she has been outgrowing the shoes I bought for recital by the time dance starts again in September!  She is also now in 5 classes...paint is my friend : )
