lets Face it , out animals are a extended part of our family, i have been searching for a decent , inexpensive vet this yr , our dogs are due for the "yrly" and it seems every where i call they are a bit over priced...My Niece who is a Vet tech in michigan even says they are over priced...for what i am getting..

we take our dogs to All Creatures - we see Dr. Lockhart mainly, but sometimes we see Dr. Latter & both of them are wonderful with our dogs & explain things very well to us. I hope this is not one of the vets you have contacted about their pricing. We have always found them to be pretty reasonably priced.
I know the SPCA has medical services, I haven't used them b/c of distance, but I know others who have and are happy with them.

Where are you looking? Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow...
Where is the SPCA? that is were i use to take my Dog when i lived up north...because it was acutally closer to my house..Right now we are at Ridge Vet in lake wales....a little pricey because i feel they add things that are not necessary....I would be willing to drive to WH or Haines City or maybe even davenport....its only one time a yr so the drive does not bother me ...
The SPCA is in S Lakeland on Brannen Rd which is why I haven't gone b/c of the distance, but when I get my rottweiler spayed I'm planning on bringing her there, I wasn't amused at the vet that everything cost separately - pain meds, IV, etc and at the SPCA I know includes the pain meds I'm not sure about the IV. Anyway, their website is http://www.lovemyspca.com/adoptionCenter/hoursDirections.aspx

There was a place I went to in Winter Haven for emergency - my vet referred us to them when the rottweiler was in bad shape last year. I loved loved loved them and would go back to them for primary care in a heartbeat but they told me at the time since our vet referred us we could only use them for emergency. I'll need to look back through my records to see the name of the place - we had a member on the old site who was a vet there - I don't know if she made the switch over... It was expensive for us by the nature of her problem but honestly for surgery and a 2 or 3 night stay it was less than I expected it to be.

Heather, I use Outback in Polk City too :) and really really like the female vet there. I wasn't that impressed with the male one though. He was real nice though and I'm a bit picky when it comes to my poodle, I spoil her something crazy so maybe its just me. A comment about food quality put me off. Maybe I'll see you there sometime :)

Amanda, the only drawback to the traveling ones is they are shots only I think, no exam, so it depends on what you're looking for.
Try Meyers animal hospital in Eagle Lake.I take my dogs there for their shots every year. The place is not fancy and has been there for years and they don't try to pressure you into other test and stuff. The SPCA is in South Lakeland behind Sonnys,it a pretty far way to drive.
Hope this helps
it was going to cost $160 for one dog..( to me thats alot) i questioned what she had me down for and there was stuff that ( another vet whom i am freinds with ) told me were not really necessary. so i told her to take them off the list of what the dog needed and she was kind of nasty ...whatever...I just need to go in there and tell them what i want ..and thats it ...My other dog will be going to a different place thats for sure ....thanks for all the suggestions ladies i will look into a few of them ..for the other dog...
oh - I didn't think to ask you what area you were looking in (DUH!! on my part), All Creatures is in Lakeland, so you may not want to drive that far, good luck in finding a new vet!
Lol thats ok....i really dont mind driving...but then it would cost me just as much in gas...lol all creatures sounds great and so does the SPCA....just wish they were closer...

i take my pets to dr. mcdaniels in Lake Alfred. I've never had any problems and they will not do anything unnecessary. I.E if you have an indoor cat, don't vaccinate for certain things that only affect outdoor cats... dogs she'll do a stool/heartworm test and the necessary vaccines... decently priced as with 4 animals, it can get costly!! :)

Good Luck!
wow,i might try that place for my other dog...i read the reviews on her and they are all good....My current vet i started to go to because she was the vet that altered my Humane society dog, so i just started taking my older jack russell there ....i think that was mistake she wants to do this that and the other thing run this test...do this ...do that ....I love my dog....but seriously he is a dog, and short of him being in pain or anything serious i just want the basic stuff for him....distemper...rabies because its reqiured...and my heartguard pills and im good to go...

We live in North Lakeland so we go to the Kathleen Animal Hospital......so I'm sure you don't want to go there.
We have taken all of our animals to the SPCA for their spay/neuter because it is much cheaper than ANY vet and everything is included (pain meds, IVs, etc). But for vet services, it is based on income and we don't qualify.
"The best food does no good if the dog won't eat it."

Put that way I have no problem with it. The other one tried to tell me all brands were the same - store brands are the same, its just marketing - and that I disagree with.

I did really like Doc P, I only saw her once though with the new puppy and she was great and much more thorough I thought.
