My daughter's 6 year molars are in and I'm thinking of asking the dentist to apply the sealant to them. We have dealt with cavities already and I'm keen to avoid any more!

I'm interested in anyone who can share their experiences. Is it really expensive? Is it a pain for the kids? etc.

I had dental sealants in my early twenties on my molars. I didn't have cavity problems but I had my wisdom teeth pulled around that time and my dentist thought it would be a good preventative idea. I'm sure the sealant has worn off by now but I didn't get any cavities so I'd guess it did its job. As for the application that was quick and painless from what I recall I had a thing in my mouth that made me hold my mouth wide open while they painted the stuff on my teeth then I think a light cured it. If your daughter can follow instructions and not lick her teeth while they work I imagine it would be a piece of cake for her. I don't recall the expense but I was on a great health/dental plan through my work. Sorry I don't have more info about that (it'd be outdated now anyway I imagine.)
My son is 34 years old .He got them when he was about 12. Iam very happy with the results. can`t remember the cost but we had no ins. ,so it wasn`t that costly. he never complained about being a pain.

My daughter (now 9) had it done when she was about 7, maybe.  With our insurance it was $15 per tooth not expensive but about $50 by the time we were done.  Some insurance companies do it free (to you) as a preventative.

She did fine.  Although we were told by the dentist it was probably going to need to be done in 2 sessions because of her age.  They did it all at once and she said it was easy.

I had it done when I was about 13-14 (they waited until my braces were off) and I have never had a cavity (knock on wood)  -  something I plan on looking into for my kids in the next couple years. I hope my insurance is on the cheaper side for it.
I had my daughter's molars sealed and then later found out that the sealant contains BPA (Bisphenol A). Supposedly there are ways to minimize the exposure and the levels drop quickly, but I still would have appreciated knowing ahead of time. (The procedure was quick and painless, BTW.)
I wonder if they are BPA free now, with all the publicity. I hope they will be in the future.
