Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

Just got into Lincoln Avenue Academy, any feedback from parents that have children that attend the school (positive or negative)?  Also, any suggestions for afterschool care options for students of this school?

I agree with Kim.  I don't have any personal experience with this school but know slots are coveted by many.  Congratulations on the acceptance and I hope someone will come on board with some feedback for you.  :)   Good luck!

regarding afterschool care - Choe's Martial Arts picks kids up from there.

Our boys go to the school and it is such a blessing.  The FCAT scores this year placed LAA 12th out of over 1700 elementary schools in Florida.  Excellent teachers, excellent parents.  What grade is your child going to be in?

Kindergarten...do you participate in any afterschool programs?

No, I'm a SAHM. Lincoln has a FB page and is very informative.  You can ask them about afterschool care.

My son is in third grade and has gone there since kindergarten. My daughter starts kindergarten there in Aug. It is not an easy school, and they do enforce the contract (parental involvement, attendance, uniform policies, behavior, etc) but I knew what I was getting into so it hasn't been a problem. I was reminded that my son needed a hair cut once, and when his tardies got out of control one year I was called in for a meeting.

Cons: it is so far from our house, they start early and the car line is ridiculously long, especially in the afternoon. I spend several hours a day just getting him to and from school. Pros: teachers and staff are good about staying on top of my son's learning. Good communication. My son has an IEP and I was able to get services for him when needed.

A huge deciding factor for us (we got into Lincoln and McKeel with the lotto and chose Lincoln) was the middle school that it feeds into. Also, the fact that they were more receptive to working with children who have IEPs and need services. They have both art and music classes, and the learning environment doesn't seem cramped. Love the campus with the pond, gardens, animals, etc. too! Most of the staff are super friendly and helpful.

The aftercare options seem to change a bit from year to year. Right now, I see the Olympian and Choe's buses, and a few day care type places...maybe the north side YMCA too. South YMCA told me sometimes Lincoln kids get dropped off by school buses, depending if the bus has room for non residential drop off. The school has it's own aftercare as well. I haven't had to use any of them yet, but I have heard good things about Choes.

Jmarr, although you've never shared where it is you live exactly, you've shared the vicinity.   I had no idea you were commuting that kind of drive to school.  Wow!  Bless your heart!  The traffic between point A and B can't be ideal either (I'm actually thinking nightmare-ish).

Our boys started at Lincoln in 1st and 2nd grade and we had to catch up to Lincolns curriciulm even though they were A students.  Starting in kindergarten is wonderful.  It is challenging to say the least, but thats what we wanted and expect out of the kids. We don't do aftercare programs, can't help you there.
