Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

We have a Kindle topic (dive into, Anyone have a Kindle or similar electronic book reading device?) but  I thought the Kindle Fire could use it's own topic especially when being compared with some popular apple products.

I mentioned in our Black Friday discussion I am very much looking for an iPod Touch for my seven year-old son, Ryan.  I just may make an about face for more research.  Not only is this Kindle Fire making this mom's eyes bigger but I think it could excite my little guy, too.

Some of the reviews Amazon has posted sound amazing.

A purchase there of the product will include a free month of amazon prime with purchase.

If you feel you want to research this product along with me, here are some articles that might help get you started.

I choose the iPad for several reasons:

  • the numbers of apps available
  • the fact that it is the most widely accepted
  • Apple seems to have a great handle on all its products in terms of keeping them current
  • screen size

If you are old enough to remember Atari vs Sega vs Nintendo ... its seemed that wider third-party support made the difference on who won the competition.

Another example would be MP3 players vs the iPod ... how many users are still with Rhapsody vs iTunes?

I see the same happening  with iPad competitors. Too many competitors, too many formats.

On screen size ... the large screen is better. Do you watch TV on a 27 inch screen?

If price is the guide, the Kindle Fire seems like a great deal. I only question, will you upgrade to an iPad after you experience the value of a tablet.

I'm interested in the Fire as well but for a different reason.  We were considering havind a tv installed in our van - about $700, plus it would only play DVDs, correct?  With the Fire, we could download anything for them to watch and it's way cheaper, plus we can use it for internet, etc.  Kids won't care that it's a small screen, and they don't have to balance a laptop ( mine are 2 and 5).

The only thing I'll say to using it in a car is you may need to get speakers for it, I'm sure there will be some that plug in, unless it's much louder than the iPad. I've been eyeing speakers for a long time, I can hear it fine in a quiet environment but add some bckground noise and it can be difficult.

I wouldn't mind checking out the fire out of curiosity sake. I do love my iPad much much more than I ever thought I would. I only complaint is no flash player so some websites don't work. If the fire has flash I see that as a big plus. I don't run into that frustration often, but I do sometimes.

I've always used iTunes even with non apple mp3's - it took me awhile but finally figured out how to get windows media player to convert the songs so I can load the kids' mp3's and my iPad with one stop shopping.

My other concern with ANY Internet capable device is monitoring the kids. Tablets and iPods are so easy to walk around with, take to friend's, I know some kids who bring iPods on the bus. I knew to look for obvious sites and searches but was SHOCKED to discover craigslist has dirty pictures posted in their casual encounters section. I didn't know that until questioning why my son had craigslist in his browsing history. Egads - it's a whole new world!

I saw a great lady make mention of interest in the Kindle Fire on facebook and it made me wonder if anyone did snag one up after they hit the market a few months ago.   If so, do you love it?   Regret your decision?

My husband bought the Kindle Fire and loves it.  He would buy books and read a few chapters then not pick it up again. For some reason he enjoys reading on the Fire. He also has some games and browses the web.  I think because you can do more with it, he enjoys it more. I have the Nook Tablet and love it.  It really depends on your style. Both do about the same.
