I am thrilled to see reports the principal wasn't seriously injured as well.  I can not imagine how she felt knowing she was ward to so many students, coming face to face with an unstable and violent individual.   It really sounds like she sacrificed herself initially putting herself in harms way in an attempt to distinguish this outburst.   I'm so glad it ended as best as it could considering the circumstances.  

The "what-could-have-happened" thoughts are disturbing as a parent
