Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

I was traveling from Lakeland back to Bartow using the Polk Parkway this evening.  A lit up sign was illuminating the message that toll increases are just days away.

The News Chief reported September of last year rate increases would be coming in the months ahead.  Fast forward to the end of June 2012 and here we are. -Toll roads' price will increase by 25 cents

Here's the Florida Turnpike's explanation of their rate increase.  Do you feel their explanations are reasonable for a toll increase?   Do you use the Polk Parkway or other Florida Turnpike roads often?

Ridiculous ideas.  Who is making these decisions?

As drivers use less gas, Florida considersgas-tax replacements

As the public buys more fuel-efficient vehicles and markets for electric and hybrid cars continue to grow, a pair of trends seem to bode well for the environment along with drivers' wallets.

Despite the growth, the state of Florida is concerned about the impact of these trends on its shrinking Transportation Trust Fund, which gets its money from the tax paid-per-gallon of gas purchased by drivers. The money from that fund is then used to pay for highway infrastructure improvements.

"The increase in the number of fuel-efficient vehicles has just exploded," said Mark Reichert, the assistant executive director of the Florida Transportation Commission. "Even though people are starting to drive more, they're trading in their vehicles that got say, 15 to 20 miles to the gallon, for vehicles that get anywhere from 20 to 50 miles per gallon now."

The less gas pumped, the less money flowing to the Transportation Trust Fund. The State needs to make a change; a change that is fair to everyone.

One option gaining momentum is a mileage-based user fee. The more you drive, the more you pay. Reporting mileage could be as simple as reporting your odometer reading when you renew your tags. "Or it could be something as sophisticated as ... a GPS system in your vehicle," Reichert said.

Such a proposal is sure to raise privacy concerns among drivers. Reichert said technology exists to help mitigate those concerns, but understands the issue is sensitive.

According to Reichert, it could take 5 years or more until any substantial changes are made in the current system.

Until then, the State will need to find creative ways to keep money going to the Transportation Trust Fund. That could mean an extension of the existing toll system and addition of managed toll express lanes.

I rarely use the parkway. The first time I did I got off and it was an unmanned toll booth - I FREAKED out! I had a $10 and that was it! I held it up to the camera and then shrugged as if to say "I want to pay you but this is all I have" I noticed the envelope to send in the toll just before I drove away. What a hassle :(

When I was seeing Dr Stratton at his old office I would use the parkway, but that's really about all I've used it for.

Recently I was meeting a friend on the south side so I took the parkway - I picked it up at the wrong place on my end and ended up taking the LONG way and barely had the cash for that trip! (I picked up I4 in Polk City and jumped on the parkway instead of talking 98 or Kathleen I think was my mistake) I will say the one time I went the right way from my end and got on the parkway to to to the southside the trip was fabulous - an easy ride and relatively quick. I live 10-15 min from the Lake County line so getting to the southside by going ALL THE WAY through Lakeland is a miserable trip.

The parkway confuses me and stresses me out LOL. I really should get one of those ez pass things but I use toll roads so very rarely I've never bothered. I always thought the parkway was a bit overpriced already but maybe that's because I tend to pick it up in the wrong place on my end. (roll eyes) (I can get lost in a box)

Probably a good idea to get the sunpass.

Polk Parkway's Non-Sunpass Users Face Hike

Sunpass users who drive the Polk Parkway won't be affected by a planned increase in turnpike tolls that will take effect June 24, but motorists who pay cash will, turnpike spokeswoman Christa Deason said Monday.

Elsewhere on the statewide system of toll roads and bridges, the rates will increase 25 cents per toll booth for both SunPass and cash customers as part of a toll indexing plan approved by the Florida Legislature in 2007.

Deason said the Polk Parkway toll increase is the first since the highway opened in 1998.

Sounds like the hike is just for paying cash -- likely an incentive for folks to get a SunPass, which will then lessen the need for manned booths and also decrease the entire money-collection expense.  Digital is easier.

My Mother's Day present from the husband was, conveniently, a SunPass.  We aren't very romantic when it comes to gifts like that, LOL.  I love it :)

From The Ledger, ti looks like just cash customers on Polk Parkway, but the original linked article, the NewsChief one, states all users will face 25 cent increase and doesn't say that Polk Parkway will be different. SunPass users will still have discount that they have now, though, so they'll be cheaper than the cash customers. I've had the SunPass for a WHILE now, and LOVE it! We didn't buy the 30.00 removable unit, but just the 5.00 stick-on, one for each car, and with the 5.00 credit they gave us for putting on the first 10.00, it was free:)
