Orientation for most public schools in Polk will be tomorrow. Are you excited? :)

Is it just me, or am I the only mom that feels absolutely exhausted at the prospect of making the rounds with my kids to multiple orientations?

I'm not sure how I will hit them all. :( Summerlin Academy and IB @ BHS is only holding one orientation time, 9 to11 a.m. I just don't see me being able to do both in 3 hours.

I really wanted to do Ryan's at Spessard Holland early, too. Thank goodness they are offering 2 divided school visit times; one in the morning and one in the evening. Looks like we'll have to take the evening shift.
I wish the district would do orientations on different days or at different times. Maybe elementary Wed nite, middle schools Thurs morning, and high schools Thurs afternoon. That way, parents can go to multiple schools if necessary.
I too am exhausted just thinking about it! I'll have 3 in elementary school this year and 1 in middle. Wendell Watson is having theirs from 8-9am and 5-7pm, Lawton Chiles 1;30-4:30 so the times don't conflict - BUT I also have football practice tomorrow night from 6:15-8:15 and if they don't make that they can't play Sat. It's A LOT of back and forth from the Green Swamp to Lakeland, especially Lawton Chiles which is downtown and a 30min drive from home. Thankfully, my parents are coming tonight to help out tomorrow. So the plan is to hit Wendell Watson at 8 with my mom and 3 kids(dad will stay home with the 12yr old and 3yr old) try to make all 3 classes in that hour, but at least hit 2nd and 4th grades. Then come home, relax for a few min and have lunch. Head to Lawton Chiles for that orientation, pick up Domino's on the way home. IF I make it to all the elem classes in the am then I'll take the kids to football practice as usual after they scarf down some pizza. If I didn't make it to kindergarten in the am, then I will go there with the 5yr old, my dad will take the middle 2 to football and my mom will stay home with the oldest and youngest.
Alicia, having that back up is awesome! I know you appreciate it.

Do you think your parents are interested in adopting a 34 year old with 5 kids? :D

Munchkin Mommy, I agree with you! It should be broken up a bit better. For my boys entering high school, I really think it's too bad they aren't offering an evening time slot for working parents. My husband really wants to attend but he's low on vacation time from summer trips.
Pheeeeew! What a day!

I did end up going to Ryan's orientation this morning. Hubby decided he didn't want to miss the day and took off from work. We tagged up to check out Ryan's school. And later we divided and conquered the older boys' schools. I went to BHS for Ethan's IB classes and Hubby went with Austin to Summerlin Academy.

At Spessard Holland, everyone was all smiles with such a positive energy! I'm really looking forward to Ryan's year there. :)

Walking around with Ethan at Bartow High, Whoa! His classes are all over the place. He admitted to feeling a little overwhelmed, and I don't blame him! This will be the first time he's been to a large school. Can you say, sheltered? Eeekk!

Austin, at Summerlin, all his classes are on that campus it's more of a tailored fit, small campus.
Even though the campus will be much easier to navigate, Austin is disappointed with his class schedule. I hope I can get that worked out. We will see.
We hit Lakeland Highlands Middle School starting at 9:00, then Valleyview afterward for the younger son. Oy vey! The parking at LHMS was atrocious. They had enough room -- don't get me wrong! But some folks had parked alongside the building which made it virtually impossible for traffic to move both ways along the road that led into and out of the P.E. field where we were parked. Yipes! And by the time we finally made it to Valleyview, they were close to shutting orientation down.

But we managed it. Now let's just see how the school year goes... :)
Boy, I guess mine was easy compared to everyone else. Both my kids go to the same school - Highlands Grove Elementary. So, It was no problem. In fact, both of my kids classes are in the same hallway. Makes it even better.
Shawn - who is Ryan's teacher?

It's not only orientation, It's terrible when the middle school and high school don't consult each other's calendar's. Last spring I had my Lake Gibson middle school daughter in a concert at the Kathleen Sr High auditorium and my son in a Audio performance at Lake Gibson High School, same night same time. I think that if two schools are affiliated like LGMS and LGHS events should not be planned on the same night. It happens all the time and is very frustrating when you are a single parent.
Ginger, I can only imagine how hard that must be. We, hubby and I, have a hard time getting to every event- practice- meeting with two of us. It would be impossible as just one. :(

Sarah, Ryan will have Mrs. Davies this year. She seems wonderful already and comes highly recommended.

She was formerly at Valley View until Spessard Holland opened.

I need to mention my day, into the evening. I spoke with the guidance counselor at Summerlin Academy about Austin taking Russian as a foreign language. Austin and I both were worried about him taking such an involved elective.

Later, I spoke to Colonel Butler, the principal himself! What a wonderful gentleman! He took the time to sit down with me, listen to my concerns and then went to the computer and fixed Austin's schedule himself. What a hands on principal! I am really impressed with this man- not because, technically we got our way, but because he was so open to what was best for Austin and our concerns. Polk Schools definitely benefit to have this man in their employ. :)
