Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

Went Friday to Walmart with Jesse and seen they are stocking school supplies.  He asked why are they putting it out and I told him because school starts next month.  Told him he has just over a month left on summer, he puts his head down, slumps hos shoulders, and gives a HUGE sigh.  I just laughed.  I couldn't help it.

I had talked a bit with one of his friend's mom about next year.  She went to the dress code meeting for 6th grade at LGMS but I couldn't get out that night.  She said they are doing something along the lines of a Blue Day and a Yellow Day for the kids.  Depending on the color day is depending on what course and what teachers you will have.  She said that they were talking about 2 backpacks, 2 binders, and folders are suggested for day, but not necessary.  It's only suggested so the kids and parents do not need to forget to change out binders and folders.  She was also told to not really go by the lists they stick out at the stores because they will not need everything that is on it.

Was wondering if anyone else knows of this any further?  I called the office and they said they will do orientation on August 16th and we'll know more then unless they send home notes.  Would LOVE to start shopping now if possible.  May just pick things up and save the receipts incase anything needs to go back.  I already picked up his shorts a month ago so set there.  Still need to get socks, binder, folders, backpacks and stuff.

Oh I do not even want to think about this.

My little one will be starting Kindergarten this year.  But, we are in such an uproar at our house.  We are in the process of foreclosure and trying to short sale our house.  We are looking to rent, but don't want to move out too soon.  We're zoned for Garner and I really do not want him to go there.  I'm really unsure if we should just register him in Garner, then if we move before school starts go through the registration again.  Or continue to wait, which will be getting pretty late and procrasitinating on getting everything done.  Registration, school shopping.  Luckily most schools allow Khaki and blue pants/shorts and we have 4/5 pairs of those, its the shirts (colors and School shirt)  plus supplies.  You kind of know, crayons, glue and stuff but they all differ.  Quite a quandry we're in.

Tabby - check out the school's website (not the Polk county website, but the individual school's website) as our son's middle school's website has a list of school supplies for each grade and each subject.  I would not wait until the orientation only because those folders they want tend to sell out early...

Joyce- I looked at their site but did not see any supply list.  I know they are going through repairs at the school and the office is temporarily moved.  We can't even go get the school tee shirts until orientation (if we are lucky).  They got no where to keep them right now.  One thing I am glad for is the principle from Wendell Watson is going over to LGMS so she already knows Jesse and his medical issues.  I figured in the meantime I would but folders and binders.  Whatever he doesn't need I can always return.  Better safe than sorry.  We stocked up on pens and pencils when he was in preschool.  Got them for a penny on clearance.  That's when they did awesome clearance prices....LOL

Searched LGMS supply list for 6th grade and found this list:

Love to know what a Scientific Calculator is and what they run in price??

Gone are the days of just showing up with 2 pencils, 2 pens, notebook, a couple folders or dividers, filler paper and the marble notebook.  They supplied everything else.

You can get a scientific calculator for $1 at the Dollar Tree.  I buy a classroom set of them each year and they work fine for my classes (High School Chem and Physics).

Went to Walmart this morning on the north side of town and they have the supply lists up.  I think the one for LGMS 6th grade list was incomplete.  They don't have anything about a binder or backpack.  May stick to the list above to purchase supplies and whatever we don't need can be returned.  May run out to after my mom gets off work to see about picking up some supplies now.

I did buy his khaki shorts and I can not remember where I put them...LOL  Here I go now this week to clean and find them.  I put things in a place I will not forget and guess what...I forget..LOL

Oh, my!  What a great tip!  Thanks for adding that.  I never would have thought they would carry a calculator of any kind much less a type with a little extra features.

School-Supply Season Creeps Into Summer Vacation

Tabby, your guy wasn't the only one thinking school supplies came out early.

I talked to a Ledger reporter a few days ago and she was thinking the same and I asked what I thought (she ended up using just a few of the things I talked to her about in the article I linked above).

I would have hated to see a mirror in front of me at my reaction to walking into Wal-Mart and seeing school supplies front-and-center.  I'm sure I had a disgusted, scrunched up face, lol.

I do not want to be reminded summer's end is coming up.  It feels like it just started for me!

On the flip side, I can see how it can help us parents on budgets spread out the expense.  (As mentioned in the above article) I went ahead and snagged some 3 prong folders because those suckers go fast!

Other than that, and already keeping an eye out for some uniform deals, that's all the shopping for back-to-school I've done.  I'm just not ready to wrap my mind around preparing for it yet

I have a lot of our supplies bought already - it doesn't bother me at all to see them in the stores, in fact it helps to buy a little at a time and beat the rush.  I cannot stand jostling around other people trying to grab a few packs of crayons etc - I like to get it all out of the way early when I can calmly and leisurely browse the items, list in hand and take it from there :D

Walmart prices are up significantly on last year for example - 50c now for a box of crayola crayons vs 25c last year and 22c in previous years.  I found Publix is a lot cheaper for things like Elmer's School Glue, Crayola crayons and Pencils with each of those items coming in at 33c each.

I bought all the uniforms ages ago :)

My kids aren't really aware of this so their summer isn't really affected - I just pick things up here and there which obviously helps spread the cost, too.

I went to Walgreens and picked up a few things before it got sold out.  Luckily their return policy is just like the rest, leave the tags on it and have the receipt.  With the two different days of classes at LGMS I went ahead and bought 2 binders and 2 backpacks (different colors of course).  I also got 12 folders with brads, 2 pencil sharpeners (in case he loses 1) and one of those pink erasers.  Came to about $31 all together.  I do have a few school supplies leftover over from when he was in pre-k and then what we picked up on clearance back then when the clearance sales were 5 cents...lol

Will be gathering up everything that I got and put it in his closet so I know where it is.  Memory just isn't what it used to be anymore...LOL

Well on Monday my mom went out and got more school stuff for Jesse.  Just got a few things more to get and then supplies are done.  Since I already have the shorts (still yet to get looking for them) I need to get socks and sneakers.  Going sneaker shopping is NOT fun by any means.  He hates to take off his shoes, try on new shoes and put his back on.  Will try to make it much more fun for him this year.  Maybe make an afternoon of getting that out of the way, grab him a new Lego set (not over $25) and do lunch at his choice place to eat.

I am almost done with school supply shopping.  I hate the crowds so I just went and got it all done at Walmart and ordered the uniforms/backpacks online.  I probably could have saved money by shopping via the sales but did not feel like dragging the kids to multiple stores to save a few dollars  yet lose my sanity in the process.

The only thing I have left to get is shoes for my boys but I figured I could get those whenever---hopefully the shoe depts. will not be crowded in a few weeks.  If they are, then the boys are going to school in their old shoes until the crowds die down.
