Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

Hi Everyone! I am new to Polkmoms, and looking for some information.

I watched 19 and Counting last night and Michelle Duggar mentioned that they teach their infants sign language to help understand what their babies are wanting before they learn how to speak. I think this is such a cool way to communicate with your little ones before they learn how to talk, and my husband and I are going to try and teach our daughter some words after she turns six months old. Have any of you fellow moms out there tried this? Did you have any success and do you have any resources?

Thank you!

Erin and Gamal

I am a teacher for the deaf and I taught both of my hearing children ASL at 3-6 months. It is very possible to do! They picked up on it so quickly, too. I suggest you go to www.asl.com and type in words and watch them sign in it on a video. The book is at times difficult to understand. If you use online ASL you get not only written instructions but it always backs up with a video. I highly suggest to do like 2-3 words a week and then introduce another new word each week after that. Start off with milk, mom and dad. Good Luck! Its a lot of fun.
We taught our youngest a few basic signs when he was a baby. I was amazed at how quickly he caught on to it!! It really helped.. he was able to tell us if he wanted more of something, if something hurt, thankyou, and many more!! I definitely recommend it!!
Our son was a preemie and took the longest time (it seemed to us) to talk till we could understand what he wanted. At age 6 mos he started going to therapy for Speech, Physical, and Occupational. The speech therapist had taught both him and us some basic signs to communicate. Once he stared talking we stopped the signs and had him use words. Although I wish we kept up with the sign language, he still uses the sign for please when he really wants something. It is a good tool to use for babies and toddlers rather than both getting frustrated because neither can understand what the other wants.
Family Fundamentals offered a free baby sign class a while back. My son was 8 months old when we started going, once a week. It was great fun and excellent stimulation for him to learn signs. He really started picking up signs at about 12 months. He was also very verbal at that point but it was fun.

Yes, we did this when my now 8-year-old was a baby. Definitely made life MUCH easier and less frustrating. I know that some people worry that learning signs will interfere with learning to speak, but once they're ready to start speaking, it's much easier than signing so the signs just naturally fade away in preference to talking. Here are some good signing sites that I liked:

http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm
http://www.signingsavvy.com/

There's also a good series of baby signs picture books by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn that worked really well for us.
Thank you everyone for your encouragement and tips! I can't wait to start with her! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Link is taking me to a GE website lol. Could you repost?
Both my kids were late talkers, especially my son. With my daughter (preemie), I did the sign language class at Family Fundamentals. She didn't catch on as quickly as the other kids, but did eventually sign...mostly just "more". I didn't keep up with it after that, but it is pretty cool to see the little ones communicate. I wish I did it for my son...he was always so frustrated!
