Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

Just started my new business this week. I'm selling custom tutus and other custom items for little girls. In the very very very prelim stage but anxious to get stated. Working on creating some inventory but need some help with ideas for exposure. I have my beginning items listed on Etsy and am adding more each night as I finish a project. Started a Facebook page and currently working on setting up a website.

So the question is....

What can I do LOCALLY to gain exposure?

I looked into setting up a booth at the Downtown Lakeland Farmers Market? Thoughts? Ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks a million!

Be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before. While enjoying those very long hours of work, as you never enjoyed working before. Accept the disapointments. Be careful of those trying to talk you into false avenues to grow your business, by spending too much. Read much, talk to others in business much, listen much, study much, work much. But most of all, Pray Much.

Good Luck.

I'd look into craft shows as a way to get local exposure. I'm not sure how no go about getting involved in them though. I know there have been some ladies on here that have been a part of some shows, maybe they can give some advice.
If you decide to do craft fair, Buckler Craft Fair comes to Lakeland and Tampa a few times each year - that would be a lot of exposure... www.bucklercraftfair.com

Sounds like a cool idea! My advice is going to sound really simple, but you should send a news release to The Ledger! They'll put your new business (and contact info) in the paper!

I think Facebook is definitely the way to go. One thing I've noticed about businesses lately is that if they offer something free by "liking' their page, the advertising spreads quicker. I have friends who "like" pages if they can win a discounted coupon or a free item and I will often "like" the same page for the chance to win something. Thus, all my friends also see the same page.

As far as Etsy, make sure you have great photos. I'm much more likely to click on a professional, eye appealing photo than a plain one. Be competitive. When I look up tutus, I get like a 100 options. Offer something no one else does to be the most competitive. This is just coming from a shopper not a business person so I wish you luck!
