Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.
Looking for a place to put my 5 yr old for the summer and after school when school starts. I live in Mulberry and there doesn't seem to be many options. I found a place on Shepherd Rd called KIDZ and was wondering if anyone has used them. My other option is the Boys and Girls Club at her school but she can not go until she is 6 and that is not until Dec 2012.

My daughter, 5yrs old, will be using them this summer for the first time. I have spoke with a couple of people that said they used them and liked them so we are going to see. She will also be using them for afterschool care in fall. I have gone and visited a few times to get her used it to because she will be coming from a church daycare and this is totally different. The only concern I have is her riding in their vans but I don't have a choice with my schedule. I do like the fact they will put her in a carseat that I have supplied without a problem. She is just 40 lbs and I don't trust her in just a car seat belt. She currently uses the 5 pt harness in my car. Not many choices in Mulberry and with my finances we can't afford the $500 her daycare was going to charge for the summer months.
Permalink Reply by Ashley Butler on April 19, 2012 at 9:59am I agree... We will be doing the exact thing. My son will go in Summer, and then use them as after school care in Fall. I am really nervous though, with him being in school and using them as transportation. I am worried abuot him missing the van one day, or getting lost, etc. Hmmm... It looks like that is our only option as well. It seems like alot of fun though. He is excited. I am just nervous.
If you haven't decided yet, KIDZ is a good program. My son went there for summer and afterschool program before I moved him, though not for dislike of it there. KIDZ is a smaller/ less kids then some other places, but well organzied and at a decent price. Their afterschool is just as good, but I will say, I thought their "homework time" could've been better. Regarding their transportation, my son went to Sikes so the ride was short. Do realize, unless they changed, young staff members are the drivers of the buses. Good luck with your choice.
Do you mind sharing what the weekly tuition is for KIDZ summer program? I just found out that our last year's provider isn't doing summer camp this year... so I made some calls (Bright Imaginations, the YMCA, etc) and found the average going rate to be about $125/week - some included lunch and field trips, and some didn't. I totally forgot about KIDZ - I went to a yard sale they had there once and I just wasn't impressed with the snotty, know it all teenagers/college kids who "worked" there. But I live in Mulberry so it would make sense to check them out before I did something radical.
Because to be honest, unless I find a better option I'm actually considering seeing if I can just take the summer off. I could still do all the "fun" things a summer camp would do (the free movies, bowling, swimming, the beach, etc and we have Disney passes also) but money would just be REALLY tight for us. I may just have to ask around and see if anyone else needs summer care. I'm sure if I got 2 kids at $75/week each plus my own, it wouldn't be so hard on us.
Anyhow - glad I caught this thread, as I don't check in here much... looking forward to reading about summer options in the S. Lakeland/Mulberry area for sure.
They are currently $90 a week. That doesn't not include lunch. Also, everyone I have talked with have been very nice.
My grandkids went there, they absolutely loved it. Lots of kids go there and their staff was always very friendly and kids were quitely doing things when parent pickup time came.
