Summer is Almost Here!  Polk Public School Release Less Than a Month Away.  Are you looking forward to the last day of school?

Polk Public schools will hold their last day of school for students on June 7, 2012.

I know for several years the end of school was marked in May.  What do you think of June ending dates?

Do any of you have a special accomplishment to celebrate with the school year's end?   Maybe a graduating kindergartner or high school senior?  Perhaps a transition to middle school or high school will be coming next year?

What about summer plans?  Are you already thinking ahead on vacation and child care options?

Personally, I can't wait for the school year to end! I'm ready for a break from the early mornings! I'm sure it will only take a couple weeks though until I'm counting down until the start of school! ;)

I have one entering kindergarten, one entering middle  and one going into high school (in addition to my other 2 elementary schoolers). My head is already spinning just thinking about getting everything ready and understood for new schools!

My son goes to school in Citrus County and he is taking his final exams today and tomorrow and then he will be done (graduating from High School).  He has already accepted admissions into the University of Dubuque, Iowa and will be leaving in August.  Received some academic scholarships and Teacher Grants.  Also planning on continuing in ROTC at University.  Also have 1 that is changing schools (Private School will be in 10th grade).  Looking forward to spending time with son before he leaves for College

I feel the same way Alicia. I am so ready for summer, but I am usually ready for school to start again by mid-summer! Where will your kindergartener be, if you don't mind me asking? I seem to remember you mentioning charter or magnet schools...wondering if our kids might be classmates at Lincoln.

We're getting so close my children are coming home chanting just how many days are left.

I'm looking forward to summer in a lot of ways but in others I feel like it came almost too fast.   My daughter was in kindergarten this year and I can't believe it's already over.   You just can't get that first year of school back.

Jmarr - he'll go to Wendell Watson. My oldest was at Lawton Chiles the last 3 years and we got a couple acceptance letters last month for two of the others for magnet schools, but I declined them and took all the kids off any waiting lists. I had hoped for a long time they'd get into Lincoln so Lawton Chiles would be guaranteed, but even though one of the acceptances was for #2 to go to Lawton Chiles I've decided we live too far away and the bus ride is just too long, especially for my elementary school kids. I've always been happy with Wendell Watson, my main reason for applying to magnets was down the road for middle, but it's 35/40 minutes if we miss the bus or if I need to go to the school for anything and the bus ride is about an hour and a half.

One of my kids needed lunch money this morning so I pulled out the menu to calculate how much to send for the rest of the year. 10 days including today! YEA! :D

Mine are finally all to the age they can either get their own breakfast or the older ones are real good about helping the younger ones with theirs. So I'm thinking of putting a sign on my door that if the sun's not up only wake me if it involves fire, flood or blood! This mama is looking forward to just a little more sleep!!!

Oh wow, that's great Alicia! I am hoping to practice getting ready for school without mom's help this summer. My son is pretty good, except he forgets to brush his teeth if I don't remind him. My daughter is a lot grumpier in the morning and I have to literally drag her out of bed and dress her. She would be more likely to get excited about making her own breakfast though...she likes to help in the kitchen.

My main reason for the magnet schools was for middle school as well. I hear you about the distance. It's tempting to let them go to the local elementary which is 5 minutes down the road! I put 20,000 miles on my car per year, and I spend at least 2 1/2 hrs a day on the commute. The ride is about a half hour each way, and the car line takes a while too. I imagine the bus ride would be pretty long too. I am so ready to do the bus, at least one way, but I can tell my husband is still hesitant. My daughter is just starting kindergarten, so I only have 9 more years of this! Made it through the first 4. That's 13 years! Uggghh!

I am actually looking forward to the summer and spending time with our son.  Even though we will have him home when school starts too because we're doing the dual enrollment.  Got to Middle School for up to 3 classes and home school the rest.  He's excited about it too.

Next month hubby took a week off after school lets out.  We do need to take Jesse for an EEG on one of those days, but we are trying to plan a few local things to do too.  We got the Busch Gardens Fun Passes so there's a day or two there.  We are also looking into going to Arcadia area to do some fossil hunting and may canoeing in the Peace River.  I got to call the Outpost to see what we need to bring with us (besides the sifter, shovel and dry clothes).  If we go on the canoe it lists the price for two in the canoe and I need to know if we can out our son in there or do we need to rent 2 canoes.

I did sign Jesse up for the AMF bowling coupons for the summer.  Wish the lanes on the northside here was an AMF, but these are only accepted at the ones on South Fla Ave.  May still check to see if the lanes on this side offer anything.  He really is not to play contact sports (seizures and brain issues) so it limits his outside activities.  He never showed any interest in bike riding and teaching him has been slow.  At 12 yrs old he still can't ride one and gives up when he falls.  He rather sit inside and play games whether it's a system, learning games on the computer, or build with Legos.  I know he would love Legoland, but not liking the prices especially when we have the Busch passes.

I am looking forward to sleeping in...Yeah Right!!!

My kids are getting restless at the thought.   With it being an overcast morning they begged to sleep in and stay home from school.   Of course I do an eyeroll because they woke up bright and early all weekend long.   I forced them up with the cheerful thought, school is almost out.

We have a beach stay planned in June and that certainly helps them look forward to our no-school countdown.

I had the same reaction here with Jesse wanting to sleep in.  If it wasn't so close to the end of school I would have crawled back into bed. Got so much going on the next 2 weeks it is crazy.  Tomorrow I got hubby's meds coming by Fed Ex so I got to stay home.  Thursday is their last Pride Day which is beach day in the cafeteria. Friday is the 5th class party and I'll be there setting up and volunteering till 2pm.  What did I get myself into??  LOL  Next week Wednesday is the class party.  Jesse wants to bring in some cookies or cupcakes.  He's still deciding and I will email the teacher to let her know.

E-mailed the lunch ladies to find out when is their last school lunch and when we gotta bag it.  Last day of school lunch they say is the 6th and we bag it the 7th. Thank goodness I only need to figure out that one day for him.  Maybe I'll come up and have lunch with him.  Never can tell.

Wow, I can't say enough how this really sneaked up on us.   The kids were so sick, for so long, intermittently missing almost 3 weeks of school.  I really felt out of the loop and we're still catching up only for it all to be almost over.

Since June 7th is the last day of school, this means there's only (counting today) 9 more days until this school year is over.   I bet you teachers are counting down to the minute.  :)

This is becoming a daily conversation at our house, how about yours?

Not counting today, it's only 3 days left until summer break is here!

Ryan and Lillian are into the countdown spirit.  Where usually they may complain about school, not wanting to get up and go, the usual kids grumble, now, they see the light at the end of the tunnel, lol.

They are so happy school is almost out.  I think another reason they're excited too is the fact their birthdays are over the summer.  We are planning a beach trip at the end of June to celebrate.  Next, we'll be counting down for their birthdays and that trip.

Do any of you have summer birthdays coming up?

Jesse is happy but sad with school coming to an end.  Since we did his IEP up for 6th grade and he really wants to go, we are not going to do the Polk Virtual School for net school year.  We have addressed all the safety issues for him getting from class to class and although we are still nervous about we are going to give it a shot.  All the teachers and some parents they I spoke with say it's easier to take him out of the school to home school then it is to put him in sometime during the year.  I can understand that.

Anyway he is happy because that means no homework and no getting up early.  The down side is that some of his friends are not zoned for LGMS and will be heading to Sleepy Hill Middle School.  Even some of those kids that are going to the different Middle School are upset as well that they will not have their friends.  You figure these kids have been together since kindergarten so it's hard on some.
