Hi everyone!   Hubby, son and I will be traveling 12 hrs, via car tomorrow and we were looking for some advice as to keeping Jaxon (18 mos) entertained.  Thanks for any input!

Don't know if you get this before you go but we have found DVD's to be invaluable.  We also like Crayolas Wonder markers and papers - you don't have to worry about crayons being eaten, melted, or used to color the inside of your car.  Make sure to stop often to change him and let him walk.  We travel to Texas quite frequently and we always take a ball along.  We stop in Penscola to rest and eat a picnic lunch.  We usually leave about 4 am so it's about 1100 when we get there.  After our picnic lunch we let our little man run and play with the ball for about 30-45 minutes.  It adds more time to the overall trip but it is well worth it to let him run some energy out.

Wishing you a safe and sane trip and return.

you can go buy a portable dvd player with some baby movies.... or if that is too much $ or just not enough time i know when i usually travel with my two toddlers i usually bring ALOT of baby snacks and they just fall asleep or just play the radio, they love rocking to the music...

I bring a lot of toys and snacks. I have a mr potato head that has a ton of pieces and I sit in the back seat and we just play.i also used to save the McDonald's toys so the kids always had new toys when they got restless. Dvd's are a must. And taking a pick nick lunch and stopping at a rest stop is helpful. Always let the child walk around at the rest stop for a couple minutes. This time I have been slowly getting little coloring things and some cheap little cars and toys the kids haven't seen yet. New things are always entertaining for kids. A sucker will keep them occupied for a while but will be very sticky so make sure to have lots of wipes on hand. my kids love to snack on fresh fruit like apples and grapes, but for my 20 month old I have been getting those snack and go things that they suck on.

If you find something that works please share.

Stop frequently, DVDs and snacks/drinks. Hopefully he will nap a bit.

On our last 18-hr road trip, my daughter was 18 months too.  The portable DVD player was my best friend :)  We made a few stops so she could walk around and explore for a little bit.  Bring plenty of snacks.

We usually try to travel at night so the kids sleep for a good portion of the trip. If they have a special toy or blanket, make sure to give that to them for the trip. Drinks and snacks are a must: bottled water, goldfish, cheez-its, dry cereal, raisins, m&m's, fruit snacks, almost any tiny size snack.  (Just be careful of choking)

The dvd thing didn't work for us :( My old vehicle had a built in dvd player, they got bored with it quickly. Books, small toys, crayons or color wonder, Kiddie cameras, video games, etch a sketch or magna doodle. And for the little ones...peek a boo always seems to work in pinch. :)

I know I'm one of them but I'm amazed at how many said DVD's.  What in the world did our parents do with us?

Gosh those must have been some long road trips!

Lol :)

We used to do games and such in the car when I was a kid, but it did get boring at times, especially when the scenery didn't change much.

I guess he's a little young for most of the car bingo games though. Maybe (mess free) art stuff like color wonder and those magnetic boards? Puzzles? A "new" toy? I forgot about those Leapfrog toys too. Those are great at that age.

I am one of those who can't read in the car, so DVDs and games might make me nauseas after a while. That used to happen to my son sometimes. We would make him take a break, walk a bit, stop watching the movie and look out the window for a while.

Your probably already on the road but Aqua doodle also makes a small folder size coloring pad. That was a great distraction when we travel. I save the happy meal toys during the year when they are age appropriate and spread them out over trips. Chick fil usually has nice kids meal toys if you let them know your child's age when ordering they have better age appropriate item IMO, like small board books.

Along with no DVD's, we had no AC, usually no seatbelts we're worn, and there were not all those nice rest stops, I remember many a time sqatting on the side of the road...those were the days.

Well...

I am fired from trip planning!  I booked our rental car on Orbitz and didn't think that we'd be taking it out of state.  Long story short, we ended up flying out of Orlando to Knoxville, TN, which was 1.5 hrs.  We're going to fly with him while his still little.  We keep our sanity and end up with more time to spend with everyone.  Thank you all for the tips!  They will come in handy when we do eventually make the drive!
