Polk Moms

Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.

We have a toilet in our house that sat for years with little to no use which resulted in a brown stained bowl from hard water, rust, ect. It was gross and embarassing. I tried EVERYTHING to clean it. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed and finally said forget it and just planned on buying a new one down the line.

Yesterday I needed to buy new bathroom cleaner and figured I would just buy the cheapest toilet cleaner I could since the thing needed to be replaced anyway, lol. Guess what! It cleaned the toilet in a matter of 30 seconds, turned it bright white and I didnt even have to scrub. This stuff is unbelievable. It was $1.24 at the walmart up here - its called "The Works"

I dont think I have ever been so excited to clean the toilet, haha! You know its good when I am calling my husband to come and look at the clean toilet, lol.

That is awesome testimony! You go girl! I am so happy you found something that worked and then I'm just as happy you shared it with us! Wow, again, awesome!

Girl, sometimes, it's just the little things like this that can make our week! Thank you for sharing! :)
i have been using the works for years. at first the only place you could find it was save a lot of the dollar stores. my grandma told me about it when we had a toilet with really hard water stains too. i don't think the other works cleaners work as good, but i think my grandma had used the toliet cleaner on other things around the house too.
That is great info. to have. Who'd have thought the cheapest one works the best. That's what I like to hear. Thanks Again!
I knew there was a thread on this stuff somewhere! I looked in the Dollar Store yesterday for this but couldn't find it. I've read that it's good for glass shower doors also. I really need something for mine - no matter how hard I scrub, or how many different cleaners I've used - I have stubborn hard water stains on my shower door. Will have to try the dreaded Walmart for it I suppose.
When I had glass doors i sprayed oven cleaner (from the dollar store) on them and just rinsed off - it worked great! Also, automatic dish detergent worked. :)
Like Cascade or something -- what you use in the dishwasher? I'll have to try that - I have it in the house, haven't quite worked up the bravado to face walmart with my two kids in tow for the other stuff lol!

You might try the magic erasers. I use them on my shower doors and it gets them clean. We don't have hard water, thus little build-up, so I don't know how well they will work if you have really tough stains. They do work pretty good at getting soap s*** off.
elisa i use the works on my nasty toilets, it works great. i squirt it in then come back in 5 to 10 minutes and scrub all the nastyness away. it's cheap try a bottle. i have seen it in many stores.
Ok I've tried the magic erasers - maybe helped a little - but didn't get rid of it all. I've done two applications with Dishwashing gel - no difference - and I've just tried plain old lemon juice so I'm leaving that there for a while before I rinse it off.

Before you think I have this grimy shower door - I don't - but there's just this very light haze on it that bugs me, and I presume it's the hard water - lime I guess. I'll have to try the toilet cleaner next ha ha!
Fallsmama, In past places I've lived, I've used toilet bowl cleaner on glass doors to cut hard water stains.

It works like a charm! (and the only thing I ever found that would do it besides one other. I'll mention that in a bit).

I know I shouldn't admit to using toilet cleaner on other things. If you read a bottle of toilet cleaner, it adamantly tells you not to use it in any other applications. :O So be careful, ladies!

How I've done it in the past is wear mega-heavy duty rubber gloves.

A good/tough toilet bowl cleaner will eat your skin off!

I'll stand back and squirt on the glass door and smooth it out over the entire glass surface (with my gloved fingers) so their is a 'skin' of cleaner on the entire door. Up to you how thick you get this coat of cleaner. I then let it set for a few minutes and wash it off with a cleaning rag.

The other thing I use that's not conventional to it's application is SOS pads. I use these to scrub my bath tub (it's a resin tub not metal- it could scratch metal). SOS pads are fantastic out of the kitchen and wonderful on those grimy tub rings.
What are SOS pads? Like Brillo? I've used brillo very lightly before but they're too abrasive, I didn't like to try it on the whole door in case it left terrible scratches.

Yeah, a SOS pad is like a Brillo pad. It really can't be used for every application and a light test spot should be used first. :)
