BARTOW | A 21-year-old Bartow man died Monday afternoon after being shot and after trying to tell his neighbor who shot him as he lay in pool of blood, a bullet in his neck.
Irease "Nito" St. Louis was shot as he stood along Crown Avenue, just a stone's throw from his house on Austin Street in West Bartow and close to Gause Academy.
He died of a single gunshot to his neck, Bartow police detectives said.
Police are looking for Antwon Raschad Myrick, 22, on a charge of second-degree murder. The motive is not known.
Betty Gifford, of 1490 W. Polk St., said she was in her bedroom when she heard gunshots outside her house.
"I heard five gunshots," she said, "and I knew that's exactly what it was. My roommate came in saying, 'They shot Nito out here.' "
"I ran out, and he was on the side of the road bleeding from his neck," Gifford said. "There was so much blood. I felt like he wasn't going to make it."
Gifford said St. Louis tried to talk to her.
"He said, 'Betty, they shot me. They shot me,' " she said. "I asked him who, and he said some names, but I couldn't understand what he was saying after that. It was almost a whisper."
Police were searching for a large, four-door white sedan Monday night in connection with the shooting.
Police Chief Joe Hall said the car, being driven south by a black man, slowed down at the site where St. Louis was standing.
Someone in the car fired at least two shots and the car kept going south on Crown Avenue.
One bullet lodged in St. Louis' neck, and a second splintered the gable of a house off Crown Avenue, authorities said.
The shooting took place at 2:35 p.m., just as nearby Gause Academy was preparing to release students after the first day of the school.

I really hope this will be a random act.
The shooting, in itself, is a sad tragedy. It's terrible when people feel the need to resolve problems this way. :(

Permalink Reply by Shealyn D on August 27, 2010 at 7:55am This is scary. One week of school has not been completed and two random acts of violence near our schools, during school hours. We send our children to school with trust and confidence of their safety. We need to think of additional preventative measures and/or securities for our schools.
