Was It Right To Turn On Intercom System during Newtown School Shooting?

Newtown Survivor’s Family Seeks to Sue State for $100M

What do you think about this lawsuit overall?

Part of the filed complaint is that a child survivor heard violence over the school's loudspeaker.

I can see both sides of this.   Absolutely the sounds of violence would be traumatizing and admittedly impossible to forget. I can not imagine what these children saw and heard on this day.  Scarring would be unavoidable after hearing such a tragedy.

But on the other side, wasn't it a good decision to turn on the intercom system, do you think?  This allowed the entire school to understand and possibly prepare in this tragedy.  How many stories have we heard of teachers huddling and successfully hiding with their students, only because they had an understanding of what was taking place, because of what was being blared across the speakers?

As a parent, do you feel school staff was mistaken to air the tragedy over the schools intercom system as it was happening?

I am outraged over some lawyer suing over the "trauma" of this student.  The parents should be thanking God that she/he is alive.  I would prefer having a "scarred" child who I could take to a psychiatrist than a dead child I would be taking to a cemetary.  This just disgusts me beyond words.

I think turning on the intercom was the best idea to protect these children.  All of those children have been "traumatized" but that intercom message may have saved their lives.

I agree with MonsterMom 100%... They should be thankful their child survived. I'm sure it was horrible to hear over the loud speaker, I'm sure it was traumatizing - the whole event was traumatizing!! Flipping on the loudspeaker was the fastest most efficient way to let everyone know DANGER DANGER!!

Shame on any lawyer for pursuing this case. To the parents involved, take your child to a good psychologist. Hug them tight tonight. Count your blessings they are alive today. And don't try to gain a payday out of this tradegy. It's shameful.

And it's BS that the lawsuit isn't about the money, it's about increasing school security. That school had better security measures in place than most across the country, certainly than any my children have attended. Draw attention to the matter?! The press has done that relentlessly since it occurred - my goodness these people couldn't even bury their dead without the press hovering. It is about the money and nothing else. Bottom feeders looking to gain from tradegy - I hope it gets tossed out, completely infuriating!!

Is anyone really surprised? I'm personally surprised that anyone finds this unusual. There always has been, and always will be those that will abuse the system, or too dumb to understand. The only difference, is that it is so much easier now for the fools to lead the wise by the collar.

What Monster Mom and Alicia said.

Not a lot of you chimed in, but for those that did, thank you (more comments are welcome).

One of the reasons I began this post was my own disbelief.   I remember when first hearing of this tragedy I thought,

What a great idea to flip the intercom system on to alert and warn the school of what was going on.

Don't get me wrong, those sounds emanating will never be forgotten but it could be sounds that saved lives.   That gunman came with ammo that could have killed possibly the entire school.   Maybe his plan became kinked when the alert went out to everyone?  Locked doors and hidden children had to have slowed his plan down.

And yes, if I was a parent of a child that survived that school shooting, I would just be overcome with happiness that my child could come home.

This really is a tough story to still stomach.  :(

The lawsuit has been withdrawn.  http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/01/justice/connecticut-sandy-hook-lawsuit/

I hope those parents have seen the backlash and realized the error in filing a suit.

Thank you for this update!  :)

Thank gosh the lawsuit was withdrawn - what is wrong with people these days??  Seriously?  Yes, I agree that I'm not surprised that someone is trying to make money out of this whole situation, but really?  Be blessed that you have your child to hug tight every night and were able to spend the holidays with them - the other parents who lost their child would trade with you in a millisecond.  People take advantage of so many situations - I just wish they would stop - including the press and leave everyone alone.  It's hard enough for these kids to have to go back to school and not be scared to death that something like this is going to happen again.  I feel so bad for those kids that lost their best friends or their favorite teacher - everyone just needs to pray that these kids are able to get through this and end up being happy in the end, which would be such a blessing.

I am not one to cry "lawsuit happy" every time a parent wants to prove a point by suing over damage done to their child. I think about how I would feel as a parent and I think about if the other party did have any way to prevent the damage...if they were negligent in any way. I just don't see negligence here. I am having a hard time understanding why the parents are suing.  All of those children are traumatized, whether they heard things through an intercom or not.

Their daughter was part of a very unfortunate event and is lucky she is alive. If I were a parent of a child who were killed, I imagine I would be sickened by this lawsuit. The intercom system very likely saved many lives including the life of their own daughter.

If kids heard what was happening after the intercom was turned on, that is really sad and unfortunate, but the teachers were in survival mode and acted on instinct. No one can predict what they will do in that situation.
