Connecting moms in Polk County, Fla.
I've been that elated, proud, accomplished mom laying in bed irritated, too, that friends and family are rotating in and out to meet hospital safety procedure and policy when visiting me and and my newborn.
At the time it seems a bit inconvenient and we may imagine first meetings with those you love and the human you just produced to be a little more ideal but I can't help but feel the inconvenience is worth it when reading stories like the one I'm linking below.
Woman Tries to Steal Newborn in Tote Bag
It just gives me shivers considering how close of a call this was. Thank goodness for the monitoring system in place at that hospital and the action of staff to recover the baby.
It really makes you rethink who to trust walking around a hospital setting looking the part of employee.
I can't imagine how this mother feels. Grateful I'm sure but at the same time she's likely considering the nightmare of a close call she was dealt.
This story definitely conjured up thoughts of close to home and our local policies in place for newborn wards.
How do you feel about local hospital protocol - is it adequate in your opinion to preventing an infant abduction? Would you consider it to be too severe? Is it just right?

I think it's perfectly fine.
Oh I aam due anyday and this is one of my biggest fears. I feel a lil better knowing that Heart of Florida has the HUGS system with the ankle bracelets......if baby is taken too close to any door leading outside the unit.......every door locks.

I had two at LRMC and they had a bracelet/anklet that we wore, but it wasn't alarmed. They used them to match Mom to baby. They did make people sign in with ID to get in. I didn't like that they sent in whoever said they were visiting without asking me first. There were times that I did not want a visitor to come in...at least not at that moment. Other times a visitor would knock on the door and come right in. My first thought was a nurse, so I didn't bother trying to cover up while nursing or whatever, but several times it was a visitor.
I think LRMC should get the HUGS system. It sounds great.
It is so scary that someone would be willing to steal another woman's child!
Permalink Reply by Rebecca Andrews on August 9, 2012 at 7:47pm I had unannounced visitors, at LRMC, too! After a male friend of my Husband walked in while I was nursing, I called up to the security desk and asked them to call me Before allowing anyone to visit. Worked out great!
