Choosing A Juicer

After watching a couple of the documentaries on the list I shared last week, I think I want to start juicing. I'm up in the air as to whether or not it will just be a breakfast kind of thing, or if I might want to try a 5-15 day juice fast. I'm also wondering how something like juicing might affect my hormones and brain chemistry, as related to my depression.

Devotional Diapers

There is a baby shower gift that I love to give. It is something every mom needs, even if she doesn't know it. It is Devotional Diapers. These little diapers give moms of babies a brief chance during their day to reflect on the Word of God and, hopefully, experience a moment of peace amidst all the feedings, dirty diapers, and spit ups.…

Choosing Documentaries

I'll admit it. I'm kind of a geek in that I like to watch documentaries. My favorite so far this year has been Helvetica, a documentary devoted to the famous font. It really was quite fascinating. Trust me.

I was searching for Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead based on the recommendation of a couple of friends who had seen in and within 2 minutes, I'd added 13 documentaries to my Netflix instant streaming queue. It is almost certain that I won't… Continue

Keeping It Real & Honest

Lots of people accuse social media participants like myself of only presenting the good side of our lives. There has even been research showing that the more time people spend on social media (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc...), the more likely they are to be depressed. The theory is that they think everyone else has a great life because we all post cute stories about our super smart kids or brag on our husbands for being so awesome. And that theory makes sense to me.

On the flip…

Only my daughter is there this year - Mia - new 2nd grade. My son Ferris is in Delaware w/ my inlaws this week.

Mia went to preschool at KBC for 2 years, and both my kids were at after school care there for the 2009-2010 school year.

We love all the programs for the kids there!!

How is it that insurance won't cover PT??? That is crazy! Is he eligible for any of the state insurance programs for children with disabilities??? Could it be covered under the hypotonia diagnosis? I'll ask my PT what she might do with an older kid for PT with a hypotonia diagnosis. Maybe you could do some of those things on your own. We have 2 sessions a week so I'll see her again tomorrow.

Oh, and glad you enjoyed the blog. I have fun keeping it up!

Dr. Eason was our first pediatrician, when we lived in Frostproof. I liked him enough, but we only saw him a handful of times with my first daughter. Dr. Enlow is with the same practice, just in Lakeland. I'm glad you found someone to listen to you. It irks me when doctors think they know better about a kid just because they have a MD behind their name!

Yucky doctor!!! I seriously encourage you to ask about PT. My ST is the one who suggested Mary might need PT in addition to the ST work she was doing.

My Mary has lots of rolls... she is growing fast too. We get to have her 6-month well baby visit tomorrow.

I assume you have a new pediatrician now, right? My girls see Dr. Enlow with Clark & Daughtry in south Lakeland. It is a long way since we live in North Lakeland, but I love that she has a smallish practice and we never feel rushed when we are with her. I don't think we've been kept waiting very often either.

Is your son in physical therapy for his hypotonia? I don't see how suspecting something leads to malpractice. How else would you know to test for anything if you never suspected anything?!

My daughter, Mary, was referred to a speech therapist at 5 days old because she wasn't nursing properly. I had an excellent nursing relationship with Charlotte, my 2 1/2 year old, and knew something wasn't right with Mary. She had a weak suck and even had trouble with the bottle and supplemental nursing system we tried.

At 9 days old, she had her first ST appt, and then as the 1st month went on, I just noticed that she didn't react the way I expected. The ST and I talked about it and at Mary's 1-month well-baby visit, the pediatrician tested her reflexes, reactions we have no control over and do involuntarily based on stimulus, and she lacked a lot of them, like the rooting reflex, and some of the startle reflexes that babies normally have.

If Mary had been my first baby, I can honestly say I don't think I would have thought the problem was her. I probably would have blamed my milk or my breasts and just switched to messy bottle feeding. I feel very blessed that I knew what a good nurser acted like and was able to quickly see that something was wrong.

I don't mind answering questions about this. Heck, I shared even more on my blog. Here are some of the posts if you are interested...

I don't think the micrognathia diagnosis was accurate though. Mary was born a super-chunky baby and I think her mouth just looked small relative to everything else.

What are you doing for your son's hypotonia? Does he have any other diagnosis to go with it? I see you have an autism awareness button, is that for the same son?
