I was really hoping to take my children on a bike ride today. With rain moving in, for what looks like a day’s set in, we start considering alternate plans.
I collected some boxes in my garage to pack away some winter gear now that spring is finally here. I also have some work out equipment out there. While putting some use to some of my weights, my 3 and 5 year olds came out to chat with me. Soon their eyes wondered to their unused bicycles and the chatting turned into, “We’re bored”. “We really wanted to go on a bike ride”.
Then to my happiness, their creativeness kicked in all by itself. I’m always glad when they can find something to do on their own as opposed to me fishing for ideas for them.
Lillian (the 3 year old) found our large stash of play-doh and Ryan (my 5 year old) started eyeing the stacked cardboard box collection I have. He brought a couple inside, and with some markers, (he marked some areas he wanted cut out and I did the cutting with a box cutter) and a cheap roll of tape (I found on clearance a while back), he’s having the best time. So much fun in fact, it drew his sister into wanting her own boxes.
On this rainy day, these boxes have already received many forms of make-believe play. A plastic army man base transformed into a boat. Now my mini engineers are formulating a duo of rocket ships.
How handy a bag of markers (washable of course!) some random cardboard boxes and some cheap tape have become today, this rainy day. I like that!
P.S. What’s up with kids’ having an obsession with tape?
